What's generally protected. Social Security benefits are typically protected from garnishment by private creditors — credit card companies, medical debt collectors, and personal loan lenders generally cannot garnish these benefits directly, even after a court judgment.

What isn't. Federal debts are the exception: the federal government can garnish Social Security for unpaid federal taxes, federal student loans, and certain other federal debts. Court-ordered child support and alimony can also reach these benefits in some circumstances.

For everyday unsecured debt alongside a protected income like Social Security, the standard consolidation and settlement paths still generally apply. See what applies to you with a free check-in.
